Why Lincolnton

A small city with a real downtown

Lincolnton is the county seat of Lincoln County. The town was laid out in 1785 around a central courthouse square, and it's named for Revolutionary War general Benjamin Lincoln. The courthouse still anchors downtown, with Main Street and Aspen Street running out from Court Square.

It's growing. The Census Bureau counted 11,091 residents in 2020 and estimated about 12,465 by mid-2025. Lincoln County as a whole passed 98,000. A lot of that growth is buyers who priced out the lake towns and Charlotte suburbs and want more house, more yard, or both.

Getting around is simple. US-321 runs along the east side of town toward Gastonia and Hickory. NC-27 is Main Street, heading southeast through Stanley toward Charlotte. NC-150 heads east toward Denver and Lake Norman.

What you'll find in Lincolnton

  • Historic homes near downtown. The West Main Street and South Aspen Street historic districts, both on the National Register, have houses from the 1800s and early 1900s within walking distance of Court Square.
  • Mid-century neighborhoods. Lincoln Park, Leewood Acres, Lincoln Forest and Hidden Valley are established streets with homes from the 1940s through the 1990s.
  • Room to spread out. Timberlake has 1–3 acre lots, Quinlan Estates has lots around an acre, and Miners Creek has custom homes on acreage north of town.
  • Newer homes and townhomes. Lincoln Meadows, Edgewood Estates and Country Club Villas were built from the 2000s into the 2020s.

Plan on roughly 45 minutes to uptown Charlotte, depending on traffic and which route you take. Denver, on the west side of Lake Norman, is about 15 miles southeast of Lincolnton.

Lincoln County Schools serves Lincolnton. Lincolnton High School is on N. Aspen Street in town, and the county has three other high schools: East Lincoln, North Lincoln and West Lincoln. Lincoln Charter School has a campus in Lincolnton, and Gaston College has a Lincoln Campus on S. Aspen Street. Assignment depends on the exact address, so always check with the district before you buy.
